orajel euthanize?

drawing_a_blank Jun 06, 2005 08:41 PM

I was reading on horned frog haven that using orajel is a painless method of euthanizing a frog. I find this hard to believe...Is it true?

Yes it does work if you do it right. Orajel numbs muscles, and if you do it to the frogs heat or brain it will quickly die.

Actually in anurans it is more effective when applied to the highly vascularized drinking patch on the belly of the frog or if the benzocaine is dissolved into a solution and the frog soaked in the solution.

Benzocaine has been accepted as an approved euthenasia agent for fish and amphibians by the AVMA since 2000.
