Update on 250g Viv With picture!

devious_froggy Jun 06, 2005 09:47 PM

Just a littel update

I'm not putting any darts in here at the moment, just a pair of WTFs. I'm currently working on a 20g viv (the whole 9 yards...will take a while to complete..) and I want to eventually get a pair of Auratus to pu in there.

**Question...I got a "Mist Maker" for the 20g at Lee Valley this weekend. Its Ultrasonic, will that hurt my future frogs? should I build a mesh box to go over it? I've seen some awsome pics of Vivs with mist makers..how'd you do it?

as for the 250g...I still looking for more plants, and I definatley dont like the tropical grass (I'm unsure of the name, the girl just said it does well in Vivs) and I'm looking for some reasonably priced broms.

I'm kind of sad about the background. because the back is sliding pannels, its impossible to mount cork bark and plants on it. any ideas on a way to spiff it up? Right now the green is that exact same colour as my room, so it does blend in well, but its soo boring. the moss i bought is growing like crazy, and ditto with the "swiss cheese" plant that i'm going to have to keep cutting back, it might get too big, but the frogs love it!The plant in the center is a stephanotis (or something.. Its commonly used in weddings) I dont think it likes the humidity...but it was a gift, and I dont like it, so I woant be sad when if dies

SO right now my focous is getting the plants right...finding some nice Broms (any ideas...I'm in Vancouver) to replace the "ulgies" (i.e. the stephanotis and the grass) and getting some more of that great moss!

250 gallons! My dream! I may have missed something along the way, but why not turn the tank around so the sliding panels are in the front of the tank, then put your cork in the back, which is now the solid front? I know that now, it would take 12 men and a boy to do this without busting something. It's just my personal opinion, but I think a cork background, or a background of graduated bromes and such would be more important than having the front panel interrupted with sliding doors, unless these obscure the vision too much. While the Stephanotis probably won't make it for long, I'd also stick with more miniature terrarium plants than the "cheese" plant and large vines you have, which will get huge in no time, (especially the roots) even for a 250 gallon. There are so many more interesting and exciting plants to try. As far as "tropical grasses," most, if not all of these are not true grasses,(Gramineae), but members of other families, such as the iris and lily families that superficially resemble grass. I have personally not had much luck with these. I think they require more light than I can provide.

On the other hand, it sure looks nice, so far. You have lots of room to experiment and change things as you go along. What fun to have 250 gallons of space to play with!!

Thanks for the Info! If you could do up a list of plants you would specifically reccomend, I would be SO thankfull! I'm currently in the market for broms to replace the grass (or not grass...) I really want to order something..or EVERYTHING, from Black Jungle...but being 17, I dont have a visa handy! so anything you could reccomend that they sell wold be even better!

About the sliding doors. The origional plan was to replace the wooded pannels with plaex-glass or acrylic, but do you know how much a sheet of think ehough, and BIG enough acrylic costs! and on top of that the cost having it custom cut...it was a good idea but just not right for my budget at the moment. we also played with the idea of a mesh front (so cut out most of the wood and cover it with mesh. but i felt that would let out to much of the heat/humidity, plus not be very prettey. But, it is actually on wheels, and I can move it around very easily with one hand so its nice having the access in the back for matnience because the tank is soo deep I cant quite reach the bottom unless i really lean in. although I have played with the idea of just gluing down the backing and doing a cork backdrop after i get the plants just the way i want them (the pannels lift out very easily, so they could be taken out, planted and set back in place without disturbing too much.
