I'm going on a trip, is it ok to house 2 boas together for a short time?

silenthill Jun 06, 2005 10:28 PM

Early July I'll be in Canada for 10 days. I was thinking of keeping my suri with my columbian for just that time period. The only thing I am worried about is them hurting each other. I would leave my suri in her own cage, but I have to mist it every day to keep it humid. Within a day it drops down in the low 30%.

Here is the two of them. Any chance of one crushing another?

Suri cage, doesn't hold humidity

Boaphile with easily stay humid enough for 10 days. There are two hides.

Anyone see any problems in keeping them together for the trip?

You could fix up tank cage to retain more moisture. Just sela most of the top with foil or cellophane etc. Not much ventilation needed, but don't seal it all. My cages have 2" vent for ~ 6 cubic foot of cage for example. The towel is just letting the moisture out. May be good to still keep the towel to retain heat??

I house several BRB's together in a modular cage but they are used to being together. Most believe it not good to keep multiples together. IMO, NOT a good idea to house together while you are on vacation and not there to watch.

How long does it last for keeping in humidity?

rainbowsrus Jun 07, 2005 09:38 AM

Not sure, but definately longer than what you currently have.

instead of that towel, tape paper or cardboard over the screen cover. (this is what you should have permanently with the tank)
I would use cardboard, or plastic, or fiberglass, plexi glass, oaktag paper, etc.... just cut it to be a tiny bit larger than the screen part itself, then tape it to the metal edges around the screen cover.
Leave a hole for the light.

Mist all down well, leave a drinking water bowl and a seperate larger bowl for soaking/humidity.

Keep the light over the whole but leave it off while you are gone. As long as there is another heat source there, you will be fine.

Anyway, they wouldn't get crushed... not enough size difference..

Are you sure that it will keep humidity for that long? Not worried about it keeping good humidity in the long run. I've got 2 boaphiles on the way.

In the case I mentioned, I wouldn't be worries about the humidity.
I think it will provide more than enough humidity for close to 10 days or more.

The issue I see here is the drinking water for your boas.
Within 10 days, it will either evaporate completely, or be defecated and/or urinated in, possibly causing harm/infection to your snake if it should drink this.

Whenever I go away for longer than a week, I make sure someone can provide drining water atleast once during this time.

Considering the Boaphile you have, it is spacious and should have hides, it would probably be ok to house them together shortly, but there are always the possiblities.. most of the time they are bizarre accidents..

I think I'll try the plastic wrap. Hopefully it should be good.
