RE: Immediate help needed for new owner with sick baby beardie - Update

cws Jul 13, 2003 03:08 PM

He seems to be improving. He has gone to the bathroom and his appetite has increased. Once I have some cash, I am going to take them both to a vet. Plus, I plan on going to a local reptile expo next weekend. I think I will be able to get some good knowledge from that as well.

I have a few more questions to ask, though. I have been dusting their crickets with Repcal Calcium with D3 powder. I have not added Herptivite, because I was told they do not really need it. For drinking, I have been giving them 1 to 1 mixture of water and pedialyte with the specified amount of Exoterra Electrodize supplement to prevent dehydration. Are these the correct supplements to be giving them? Any more / different ones? Can receiving to many supplements be detrimental to them?

Also, I have 150 W basking bulbs 12” to 18” inches away from their basking spot, but the temp does not seem to be reaching above 95°. Is there a better way to get the temp up?

Thanks again to everyone on your informative replies, they have been very helpful.-cws

Well Its Good To Hear That He Is Doing Better. As Far AS THe Herptivite, I Would Suggest That You Use It.Vitamin Intake Is Important. I Use Rep-Cal (Pink Label) ANd Herptivite(Blue Label). I use A Mixture Of 3 Tsp To 1 Tsp. It Has Always Worked Very Well FOr My Babies And The Few Dragons That I Hav Recieve Via Rescues. I Also Suggest Giving The Dragon Just Standard Pedialite For Hydration. There Is No Need To Mix It With Water. Usually When I Have To Use This I Give 3 Doses A Day And I Also Allow Them To Soak In Warm Water For About 15 Minutes. This For Me Seems To Be The Best Way I Have Discovered To Rehydrate A Dragon. As For The Heat What Size Enclosure Is It In First Off?
I Use A Normal Shop Clamp Light From Wal-Mart And A 100w Standard Light Bulb For Heat And A UVA/UVB Bulb. HopeFully This Will Help This Little Guy/Girl To Come Back To Healthy Happy Active Dragon That It Was When It Was Hatched. If it is possible, lower the height of the bulb. Also, you coudl try raising the elevation of the basking spot. If your calcium does not include vitamins, then you do want to use the herpitivite.

temperature on the bulb will vary with bulb type more than wattage. Spot lights concentrate the heat more than floods and hallogen bulbs are the hottest. Using a regular 150W hallogen didn't give me the heat that a good spot does. I use 50W tungston spot lights in my visions and the basking temp is between 110 - 120. (some of that heat is radiant heat from the vision below) with a 50W hallogen spot from home depot the bottom tank will hold a temp of 110 - 130.
