need some advice on breeding males.

sledge Jun 07, 2005 11:09 AM

i have a male,ANGUS and he is a good size and ive had him for about a year and a half now.

i want him to breed but he dooes not seem in the mood. i was wondering if there is anything to do which might trigger his breeding instinct. i thought about putting him with another male to possibly work him up a little. He has two gravid females in with him but he will not do pushups or anything. i took one female out and put her with Kublah another male i have and they mated instantly. i really want babies from ANGUS but i dont want to let gravid females go to waste either.

My yellowhead male would not do pushups or head bob while inside. For some reason when I put him in his outdoor pen he kicks in. The first thing he does is starting pecking at the ground, nibbling on tiny pieces of grit or something...getting some extra minerals in his diet I guess :O). Then he usually hope up on a rock and does a nice big push up. If a female is near, and makes any movments at all, he will normally headbob, and move a bit closer...another push up.

Hey,
I seem to remember reading that some people used a mirror on one side of the tank to encourage the territorial nature of most male lizards. After seeing the "other male" they go nuts, and normal behavior was noted. Although I don't know to what extent this technique is/would be successful. So yeah. If you try it, let me know how it goes. I can vouch for its usefulness on Anoles. Hope you get him fired up.

Eve and I were just discussing this in e-mail the other day...don't know why I never tried it with collareds. I can vouge that it works great for Veil chameleons too. My male would get so fired up, he wouldn't let go of your hand!!!
