Can you feed too much?

silverscale Jun 07, 2005 11:56 AM

Is it even possible to feed too much? I mean, a meal is present and snake strikes and eats it-wouldn't this happen in nature as well? Is it physiologically damaging to artificially increase the number of meals? I've heard that this is possible but in the case of a sometimes finicky ball python, I'm tempted to just keep feeding while the hunger is on.

From what I have read here oon the forum and in books a snake will not over eat, they can be over fed if Power fed (pushing another rat in after the first is started to be swallowed)

Hope this helps

Snakes rarely over eat in the wild do to scarcity of food, among other factors. It is possible to feed a snake too much, to the point of obesity. This can/usually will shorten the snakes' lifespan considerably.

For instance, feeding adults on the same schedule as small juvies/neonates (every 4-5 days), can cause obesity and other problems. An adult male older than a year or two really doesn't need more than one good sized meal every two weeks. Females may feed more often, every 7-10 days, especially prior to breeding.
