A first time find in So Cal.

bigdnutz Jun 07, 2005 04:06 PM

At least it was a first time find for me. I was so stoked when I saw this guy on the trail. Funny thing was he tried to escape by heading right into a stream. He sat under a rock, fully submerged for about 30 seconds while I watched. I don't know if this is normal behavior for this species but interesting nonetheless. I pulled him out of the stream and he posed for me.
Taken with a Digimax 420 on the macro setting. This was a time I really wish I had a better camera.

Enjoy

Rich, nice find and photographs. The colors on the snake are great. Number 2 is my favorite because the head is more visible. One thing that would probably improve this is a tighter crop to eliminate some of the distracting area around the snake. This would focus attention more one the snake and allow off-center placement of the head and bright underbelly which should be the real focal points of the shot. Here’s an example of what I mean.

Cheers,
WK

I really wanted a really close-up shot but couldn't seem to get it with the camera I had. It kept coming out blurry. I didn't have a tripod and in the meantime my wife is telling me to take less pictures of the snake and more of our 1 year old daughter.
This was the shot I hoped would turn out nice but the focus was a little off. It's very similar to the one I posted before but I think the first was sharper. The camera is a simple point and shoot digital. I did have the macro setting on but it can only do so little.

Also, the whole time I'm just stoked about finding one of these guys. I don't think they are super rare but I have had them at the top of my find list for a while.

Yes, I've run into some of this too LOL!

I think the out of focus areas in this third shot are due to shallow depth of field which you really can't avoid at close range, regardless of the camera. There are some very sharp areas in the picture which tells you that your hand was steady and / or shutter speed was fast enough to freeze any movement.

Again, great looking ringneck. The ones on the southeastern coast aren't as big, in my experience, and have a darker dorsum. I've also never seen one do the tail curling behavior, although I may not have harassed them enough to produce it.

Regards,
WK
