Hoke County, NC Eastern Hognose ~ Sandhills Hognose Snake

ECC Jun 07, 2005 09:44 PM

My friend Zee caught this snake for me in the early spring. He traded it to me as a frog/ toad feeder but he has never eaten anything but live and frozen thawed pinks for me (he ate 3 pinks on Sunday).

Peter,

NICE LOOKING SNAKE! I've seen that color phase turn melanistic or go red...its a crap shoot! Don't even try to guess until the snake's 18 months old or more!

good luck!

Anthony, are you saying that the melanistic color morph in eastern hogs, is developed, more than being a recessive trait like in garter snakes?

not really develops as per environmental conditions. Its pre-existing in their genes. Its like corns or others that dont develop adult coloration until they are 2 years old or so.
