River Road Alterna

snakesunlimited1 Jun 07, 2005 10:26 PM

Hi everybody I just got back from Texas and came home with one nice male juvie from the River road. It was found about 1.2 miles west of Panther Canyon in the middle of the road. We were seeing night snakes all night and I kinda thought this was another but for some reason I flew out of the car for it and then was doing the alterna dance. It was part humpty dance part Iggy Shuffle but it was good. He is a really nice alterna phase and everyone I showed him to said it was the nicest tey had seen off the river. It is the only one i saw so it is the nicest for me.
The alterna was the highlight of the night but the highlight of the trip was meeting Tom and Mo (aka CoachTE). They where the best people I have ever met out herping and they really made the trip. We only found about 30 snakes in 7 nights and for me that is slow as hell so good people were the best find, besides the alterna of course. Roy at the Outback Oasis Hotel in Sanderson was also a great person to meet and worth the trip if you are in the area. He has a hotel with a snake room in the main entrance by the front desk and a 7 foot bull in the private snake room that he keeps elsewhere that is worth a look. He was truly a great person to meet as a herper but also as a great source of what is being caught in the area. He has a lot of people stopping in letting him know whats happening.

So if you are out in Texas try finding Coach if he is out there and stop by and see Roy and your trip will be better for it. Sorry i am having computer problems at home still so no pics right now but i will try to get some up some how.

Happy Herping
Jason

Awesome, congratulations. Can't wait to see the pics.

As the other abuser of our rental car, I must agree with Jason that the highlight of our trip (besides the River Road alterna and Jason's subsequent dance) was meeting and hanging out with Tom and Maureen. They showed us west Texas first-timers the ropes, provided great company, helped us round out our two trios of subocs and even bought us lunch across the border. Maureen, I'll never be able to pronounce "Pictuhgaastuh" the same again Thanks guys!!

We also got to hang out and herp with Steve Boyd, whose been making herp trips to the Trans-Pecos since '65! Great stories and a really nice guy.

I'll also 2nd the plug for Roy and the Outback Oasis Motel. It's a great spot to get you hyped for your herping adventure as you'll probably get to see an example of whatever you're after in his display room. Looks like a pretty nice place for really reasonable rates, so consider staying there.

Oh yeah, our (now Jason's) River Road Alterna: (We only had to drive about 2,600 miles of west Texas roadsb to get it)

Happy Herping!

Thanks Glynn that pic came out real nice. He ate a rat pink on the first try. Took him about 10 seconds to decide he was hungry. So I guess I have a good feeder in this guy. I can't wait to see the rest of your pics and I think to save time I will just burn mine on a disc and mail them to you since I can't afford a new hard drive right now.

Also which car were you in if you don't mind me asking?

Lance and I just walked in the door from the river.

Congrats!

We got it on 31 May @ 0240. We were driving a dirt-colored (it would have been dirt-colored no matter what color the paint was) sunfire rental. I believe the only other car we saw on the road that night was Tom and Maureen's.

tatesrus Jun 12, 2005 02:16 PM

Oops. Now that I engaged my brain, 0240 would have technically made it 01 June.

stevenxowens792 Jun 12, 2005 05:39 PM

That was before Lance and I made it out. We arrived on June 4th and left yesterday. I will post all of our findings...

Congrats again,

Steven Owens
