just off the top of my head, I would have to guess black phase Elaphe persica (or whatever genus persica is in now).

I'll guess buttermilk racer.
Looks more like a black racer, coachwhip or a dark phase buttermilk racer than it does a rat snake. My #1 choice would be a darker colored buttermilk racer.

Looks like a racer to me also. That inset eye (the way the orbital bone protrudes over the top) looks different than the typical rat snake.

I didn't guess it at first either, as I had never seen pics of melanistic specimens. My initial thought was climacophora, but luckily there is a good field guide to Japan by Goris and Maeda.

Quite a common find in Japan. I will say this though, they are much more "racer-like" in behavior than American rat snakes.

Looks almost like a ribbon snake with a racers head to me
