green toads breeding

kaplumbaga Jun 08, 2005 08:49 AM

My green toads Bufo viridis spawned yesterday. The male escaped from his tank last week and I found him in the garden pond, I put the female with him and they spawned after a week together in a tank. The female didn't look in the least interested and I am sure it is the stimulus of the male that brings on the reproductive state. I've noticed this before with Bufo bufo common toads where I've put long term captive females with newly caught males and they duly spawn within a week or so. I hope the spawn is fertile and will survive in my Irish climate. Photos of the two in amplexus last year available in the photo gallery.

What a fantastic shot of them! They are beautiful! Good luck, and I hope that your spawn is definitely fertile also.
