Dead Tail???

captsub Jun 08, 2005 09:09 AM

It has been a couple of days since we rescued Lister and I tried to sex 'him' this morning. I am concerned about her tail (Lister is actually a girl. The last 1 1/2" looks dead. The end is hard and dry and darker in color than the rest of her tail. I have never owned an ig before, is this normal? OR does she have dry gangrene? Is there any risk to her if it stays that way? I have a vet appointment next week, but if it is dangerous to her health I will get her in asap.

its ifs gangrene then that section of the tail will need to be removed to prevent it from traveling and eventually killing your iggy. Im sure someone will correct me if i am wrong but i believe it should be ok to let it wait until your appointment. Of course if you are concerned you could call and tell your vet and ask him/her if he/she thinks you need to come in sooner

I have been looking at pics of dry gangrene and it doesn't look like that. It is just dead. There is an odd bend in her tail right where the dead part starts. I wonder if she was banging it a lot in her so-called enclosure before I got her? Would they do that if the space was too small?

This happened to Julius when we first got him, too (also a rescue). The vet told us he had injured it, probably whacking it against the sides of his cage, which makes sense because he was in much too small an enclosure in his previous home. A day or two after we got him, the "dead" part fell off on its own, and seems none the worse for the wear. The "dead" part was the last 2" or so of his already regenerated tail.

I would take my Ig to the vet asap. Sounds like she needs better care then she's gotten.

This is the best site for information about Green Iguanas. It belongs to Melissa Kaplan, who wrote the book, Iguanas for Dummies:

It certainly saved my Ig, G'Kar. He's a healthy growing boy now.

Good luck
