jkins Jun 08, 2005 11:20 AM

I have been tryng out different substrates and I want to try sani-chips but haven't really read anything about them especially in comparison to Aspen Bedding. Can anyone give me some pros and cons of each? I would aprreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Never used sani-chips. Aspen is one substrate is use. In my opinon it is the way to go. Makes cleaning easy, all you do is spot clean and replace what you reomve. I do a complete change and clean about every two months. Only have eleven cages at this point, only takes about 15 minutes to spot clean all cages. Alot of people say do not feed on it, I have never had a single problem feeding on aspen. Pine bedding is another substrate I use when the local store is out of aspen. Again some people will say no to pine. When I started 30yrs. that is what was used. Never had a single problem, never heard of a problem.

I've never tried sani chips either, but I love the aspen I use. I change it also about every 2 months or so, spot clean when it is messed on. I feed all my snakes in their cages... i just put an 8x11.5 piece of computer printer paper in the cage and put the thawed rat on the paper.

Here's what most people won't admit to. Aspen is digestible in small amounts. Sani chips are not. Think of it this way. A snake kills a rat in the wild. There will be leaves twigs etc all around. He's not gonna drag the rat out to a big rock and make sre its completely clean before eating it. Therefore in the wild they will have to ingest some amount of twigs or whatever. You just don't want to get TOO MUCH in there. THAT will cause an impaction.

Sani-Chips are a product of Harlan and I use #7090A which is a Lab Grade chopped Aspen. I have over 150 snakes in my collection and feed in the cage, never any problems. I have heard of problems with the dust of some different beddings and there is no dust with Sani-Chips.

Hope this helps...
