Problem with new female, swollen, crusty vent area.

wfreptiles Jun 08, 2005 11:46 AM

I am new to Cresteds, my son purchased a pair at a local reptile show. About a week after the purchase the female started swelling at the vent, I thought it might have been a male who was just begin to drop. When I checked them today the female who was swollen now also has a crustiness around the vent and looks a little red. I can't get a vet appoinment for 3 days. Any idea of what might be going on or any advise on what to do to help until the vet appointment.
My son and I would appriciate any help.

Maybe try soaking her in some luke warm water until you can get her to the vet?

I just had an abscess removed from my gecko, Syth, yesterday.

Can you seperate the two to make sure she's pooping okay? If that area is swollen, that could be a problem.

I'm new to cresteds too and this site is a great help. Good luck!

i have just had an experience with such a complication on one of my leopard geckos, it turned out to be a flagellated organism that was causeing the infection. i personally dont know if soaking it in water will help at this point...

hopefully you will get to the vet soon. i imagine that they will treat her with a variation of Flagyl one or preferably two times ver the week after the visit.

Because u have two animals that came from the same environment you will NEED to treat both simultaneously to stop a cycle of repeated infections, in addition to completely sanitizing thier cages.

I suggest you go over all of this with the Vet of course, and i wish you luck!

Thanks to everyone for all the info and ideas. I have an appointment with Dr. Greek Friday at 3:30 he's a top notch reptile vet here in So. Cal. I will go over the info I have received and hopefully we will get her straightend out. She hasn't started losing weight yet so I hope I have caught the problem early enough to handle.
Thanks again for all your help.

since u have said it is not losing weight, my guess is going to be giardia, since my leopard gecko had the same symptoms as your crested, and that was its diagnosis.

obviously i cant say that for sure. let us know what the vet turns up.
