white-sided everglades rats VS ws yellows

lilgemsmice Jun 08, 2005 12:01 PM

Does anyone have comparison pics of the WS yellow rats VS the WS everglades? Besided a subtle difference in color - what would the major differences be? I recently purchased a few WS everglades (3 snakes, originally from: Andy Barr, Dwight Good, and Gulfcoast Herps.)

These are my first everglades rats ever. I have had corns for years, and I have occasionally ended up with a wild caught yellow rat (these guys tend to show up in the most unwelcome places, like my mouse room. I used to breed doves and would find yellow rats in the avairy too.) Is there a significant temperament difference between the everglades and yellows? I've never had a captive bred yellow rat, and never kept a wild caught long enough to try to tame it.

thanks,
charlene

Hope this helps. It's a white-sided yellow (Iwas told everglades) that I purchased for a buddy. As you can see, it was a real sweetheart:

cool... nice pic. How do you know that it is a yellow when it was supposed to be an everglades? Is there something specific that makes it an obvious distinction? I have heard that the white-sided trait makes it more difficult to distinguish the 2 based on color alone, because the WS trait washes out some of the everglades "orange." And some people cross the 2 (yellow ws x everglades ws) which only confuses the matter further.

I now have 3 "white-sided everglades ratsnakes" that were all sold to me as everglades, but the feeding records for the most recent pair say "yellow rat." Hopefully I will be able to get the confusion cleared up soon, because I plan to breed these guys eventually and I want to represent the offspring correctly.

thanks! Charlene

The snake above was bought for me and I never felt good about it. I never had a reason just a feeling. So I can't explain why. I never used it to breed with anything so no big deal. I was hopeing for something nicer I guess.

As far as your queastion I would go back to Dwight Good. I have spoke with him and have always got a good honest vibe from him. He is very knowledgeable in the Obsoleta group.

I have seen these sold as both but its because they all come out looking like yellows.I have never seen a GHOST GLADES/white-sided yellow retain any orange charecteristic of "PURE" glades.I have included this gene into my yellow rat morph line because of this.Further, bluerosy(I think)verified through breeding trials that the black rat whiteside gene and the ghost glades gene are one and the same(likely, allelic). It further shows that defining these snakes by color(and assigning ssp. designation by color)is incorrect. They are nice snakes and when combined with other morphs should be REAL fun to work with,Jeff
