Mystery dents

hatchman Jun 08, 2005 01:51 PM

These are freshly collected snapping turtle eggs, Each egg has a small dent. Last years collection were perfectly round, but in the ground for 2 weeks.

Anyone ever see this before?

P.S. I didn't see the numbers last year either.

It could be that the humidity is too low. That would be my best guess although I am not a breeder.

Yeah the humidity is to low. Do you have the container covered? If not I would cover it with only a few air holes. Also, mist around the edges of the container (not directly on eggs) That should help keep the median moist and raise the humidity.

It's probably also a better idea to number eggs using a pencil, as opposed to pen or marker, just incase some of the ink leaches through the egg..

Nature always amazes me.
I still can't believe they lay them with the numbers already on them !!

These eggs were collectd within 24 hours of hatching. I don't think they had wnough time to dry out.

Thanks for your comment.

Mystery solved!

One week after collecting the dented snapper eggs the dents have disappeared. I've kept them in moist vermiculite. They apparently soak up water. They now look like perfectly shapped ping pong balls.
