How can you tell...

if phants have "done the deed" if you're not around to see it? My male and female phants have been hanging around in very close proximity to each other lately. Usually, they were in their own "territories", not really coming in contact with other much. Now I see them side by side, and every night they are always in the same places together. Is this indicative of anything or am I just being too hopeful for eggs?

Thanks all

check for bite marks near the neck of the female. i cant say that i've ever found them on females, but i definitely have noticed them on males due to territoriality when i have them housed together. remember, youre not always there to see every action they make, not to mention we sleep through the majority of their active period. so i wouldnt count it out, although you also cant 100% count on it. keep feeding them a lot, spray them a lot, and watch to see if your female balloons, or spends several nights in a row roaming the bottom of the enclosure. also take note if she "disappears" and do you best to locate her if so, but of course do not bother her if thats the case.

In my experience, not really. I see mine all over their cages in relation to each other, but never does it mean anything for the most part. I have seen them locked up a few times, but have never pin pointed when they have copulated in regards to egg laying. My animals seem to lay quarterly, where as mike's animals seem to lay monthly (mike you biz nitchess). Just pay attention to them and wait. Some times new animals do not want anything to do with each other until they are comfortable with their surroundings. I know for our mouse lemurs here at the lab, they won't even look at each other let alone go to the other's hide box until they are comfortable with their environment.
