Laying in water?

boajeff Jun 08, 2005 03:54 PM

My fiance is an experienced breeder but he is at work rigth now and this is my first time. One of our females just layed her eggs in her water bowl. Our humid hides were nice and moist i know that for sure. I thought she was gonna lay because she was acting weird. I got the eggs out of the water very quickly after she layed them (less than 2 minutes) but because she was moving around the eggs were kinda floating around and turning and rolling. When i got them out i was very careful not to turn them but i am concerned because she made them roll all around in the water. Any idea of how to get her to lay in the hide next time? My fiance warned me about this, he told me he has always done that and this is the first time anyone was around to get the eggs and they all went bad until now. Do you know if they will be okay or not??

Just mark the top and put them in the incubator and you'll just have to wait and see. Some females lay in water bowls when the humid hide isn't moist enough and some just lay wherever. It does concern me that the eggs rolled around a bit but there's no way to tell which way was originally "up". Good luck!

If the time they were in the water was realy only 2 minutes, I would not worry at all about them drowning or about them being rolled around.... It is only bad to roll an egg once the embryo has attatched its self to the wall of the egg..... This does not happen in only a few minutes.... It takes alittle more time than that.....

What can you can do to prevent a female from laying eggs in a water dish????

You can offer a gravid female more than one humid hide in different parts of its encloser with different temp amd humidity levels.....

Some females can be very picky about where they lay and if they do not find the conditions they like, they will dump them off in the water dish......

Good luck...... I hope all your eggs hatch....

I kinda figured that the eggs would be fine because i have read many times that the mother will rool the egg to sort of camoflouge it in moss or whatever. This morning they are nice and hard and i am hoping fertile! thank so much for your advice, i will try to add a few more humids.
