Lost red ear slider

tinker4 Jun 08, 2005 06:52 PM

I have a 1250 gal pond with approx 25 gold fish ranging in size from 1 in to 8 in. So 8 days ago I bought a 5 in red ear slider to put in my pond. I put him in and have not seen hide nor hair of him. Ive looked all around to make sure he didnt climb out of the pond. I talked to another guy who has a pond and several red ear sliders. He says that the turtle is just shy and will come up when he gets hungry. I still worry because I have not seen him at all. No basking in the sun or anything! Should I be worryed? What can I do to draw him out. I have snals, alge, and plants, so I guess he could eat those. Any info would be helpfull. Thanks Greg in Arizona

If he is in there you may hardly ever see him, if he isn't used to people he will hide. On the other hand, turtles are escape artists, and will escape if the water level is high enough. Also, predators such as racoons will eat turtles if the pond isnt fenced off.

The pond is fenced in and we dont have any racoons or cats. I think he is just hiding. The deepest point in my pond is about 2 1/2 ft. deep. I have lots of lillies and cat tails. I think he is hiding out in the conjested area of plants in the bottom. Is there any thing I can do to lure him out!

You could kill one of your fish and float him at the top, then check it occasionally and see if its being eaten.
