I too have noticed this in some of my snake eggs.

Most believe it's because of less mineral stores in the body that are used to form egg shells. I've heard some believe that they use most of their calcium stores for the first clutch and have less for the second clutch, but I've also heard contrary to popular belief, by quantative analysis, calcium is not as prevalent in snake egg shells as people think. Hence, I'm spouting hearsay, but it makes sense to me that the second clutch is so soon after the first one, they wouldn't have had time to rebuild up mineral stores. Shrug?
