sudden death

kirkpatrick Jun 08, 2005 11:24 PM

I bought my boyfriend a tokay gecko about 3 months ago, as a baby. Today, we found him dead with his head in the water bowl. He is very upset since the tokays are his favorite, and he has raised it since it was young. I have pictures, but I dont know how to add them here. But pretty much he was big and fat, no signs of diseases or anything. Does anyone know what this might be, and how we can protect our other tokays from whatever this is? any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

I once a couple years ago or so found a new hatchling drowned in a water dish I kept for humidity reasons. My thoughts are, and i don't really want to test them is that they have trouble sticking in water and so if the bowel/dish is deep enough and they go in they can't get out and will drown. If the water dish is for drinking I would take it out since they rarely use them anyways and stick to misting once or twice a day. If the water dish is in there for humidity reasons it should be covered with a screen or mesh of some type so the Tokays can't get in. If you feel you need a water dish be sure it is very shallow and should be changed every day. thats my best thoughts only knowing what you spelled out. BTW, how big and deep was the water dish? sorry for your loss.

the water dish was about 2" diameter. an inch of water. pretty small. only his head was in the dish. legs were on the substrate.

Hmm, doesn't sound like it drowned. Being you purchased recently from a pet store chances are they were WC. Many times wc Tokays come heavily infected with parisites which should be treated right away cause once you put them in a captive environment they will multiply to unsafe levels. Add to that the tremendous stress, which will be unseen by you, will lead to a untimely death. Its really hard to say what it died from without having a vet do a exam on the dead Tokay. You might look at having your surving one looked at by a vet or a stool sample tested. It could have had some internal problems unseen for a long time or flat out stresss did it in. I really doubt the other attacked and injured it but if so you should see war wounds if it caused death.

the tokay that died was about 5 or six months old. captive hatched. he was kept in his own encloser in my reptile room which is 80 degrees. with a basking spot in the high 80s. kept on coconut fiber. mist 2-3 times daily. plenty of places to hide. very healthy. he was my nicest tokay. i still have his brother who is really nice as well. i don't think there is anything wrong with any of my tokays but i don't want to lose another.
