New to the family

crotaphytusman Jun 09, 2005 01:21 PM

My brother just got nine veild's yesterday. They are all female so now I just need to get a male. We are going to go to our local reptile shop today and look for a nice male for me so they can have a "friend" later. As soon as I saw them I was in love. They really are great little creatures. I just hope my collard lizards don't get jealous

Thats insane! Thats a hell of a lot of big cages to build/buy.

I'd says congrats on your new pals, but I do have to wonder what you are doing?? Not judging, just wondering...why did you get NINE female veileds? Is your plan to breed and get lots of babies?? Lots of $$, time and care. Even with no breeding you will have to contend with all of your girls developing and laying infertile clutches - Luna laid 4(!) in the last 12 months and I had over $1000 in vet bills total in that time frame.

As Josh pointed out, you will need 10 separate 2x2x4' cgaes: 9 for your girls and one for the male you plan to get. Do you have other herps? Have you kept chameleons before? (now be honest...

How old are they? You said they don't seem to get along - uhhh, were you not aware fo this before purchasing? Btw, WHERE did you get them - all from a a pet store???

I have to say, that from your photos they look older and the one hanging from the screen looks emaciated - can see all her ribs

Hope you know what you're doing...

The 2x2x4 cages will do OKAY for the girls. You will need a LARGER cage for the male. Maybe 2x4x4 or bigger.

I honestly hope this herper knows what's (s)he's gotten into with 9 female veileds. Good luck, let us know if we can be of assistance!

hope my post did not sound judgemental in anyway, I just cannot imagine having 9 chams unless I was breeding - and even then...

also hope all my typos didn't make me sound like a complete idiot! ;-/ Still think this forum needs a built in spell-checker - lol!

I would like to apologize for any misunderstanding about those Veilds. I did not explain very well at all. Yes my brother recieved nine female veilds from a guy who was breeding. He refused to sell just one because he wanted to just ge them out of his house. That explains the shape they are in. I don't think he was giving them the proper care at all. Now, I would NEVER keep nine veilds together because that would just plain be irresponsible and a bit stupid. We took eight of the females to a local shop and now have two, one male in a seperate set up that we traded for eight females. If anything was stupid it was trading eight females for one male and a few hundred crickets but we now know they will have the proper care. So yes my brother and I had nine females in two cages for about 10 hours untill we went first thing in the morning to ge them all to our local herp store. To be honest, it's a good thing we got to them when we did, a few of them did not look so good. I know the owner of the shop they are at so don't worry, they are in good hands. He has held and bred a few of my reptiles in the past. As far as the herps I have had in the past, I can give you the list if you would like but right now I just have two collard lizards C. Collaris 1.1.0. I hope to have a few more little ones as soon as they make it out of the eggs I would like to thank you all though for your concern. It shows how great this forum is. It reall is a great resource for beginners as well as the pros. I will post some more pictures of our new male as soon as I can.

Thanks for the explanation and understanding about our concern. So often we hear from a newbie who did something like this out of ignorance that we get a bit reactive. After all, we wouldn't be here if we weren't a bit biased! You know, another idea for housing them is to build one large cage and put in visual barriers. Even plastic trash bag material "stitched" to the cage mesh would work. The large cage can share uv lights, misters, foggers, etc. and if you make the visual barriers removable you can adjust the cage to suit when you need it.

Thanks for the advice. My brother is a contractor so he is building a HUGE set up with a divider down the center. Right now we are using two mesh cages the guy that had them last gave us. We could keep them in these but he's going to build some bigger nicer looking cages. I will post some pics when it's all done.

I think we were all trying to be as "nice" as possible so as not to alienate you since we did not not know the whole story. Thanks for explaining
