Ill Uro?

sharonedmeads Jun 09, 2005 01:24 PM

I have two uros, not completely sure which species of Uro they are. One we believe is a male, about 7" lots of red and eats plenty. We can even hand feed this one and he is out all the time and seems very healthy and lives in a large vivarium. The other about 5" long, pale brown and grey, in a large vivarium on her? own. She has virtually stopped eating, wont come out, if you take her out and place her on a rock, she freezes then hides again. We have also noticed in the last few days she does not seem to have been to the toilet? I have had these two for about three years and recently set up the two new vivariums for them. Anyone got any ideas if this is normal. Thanks Sharon

maybe a geyri for the red one and a mali for the brownish one? look on deerfernfarms.com to see different species.
have you ever had them tested for parasites? this can cause them to feel bad and they will hide and not eat

Has this behavior just been going on since you put her in a new viv, or was it before that ?
Just curious, as some will act strange for awhile in new surroundings. (Just a thought)

I would certainly keep my eye on her, if I noticed her not going to the bathroom, for any length of time/ or weight lose than have her checked.

Hope she snaps out of her FUNK, soon

Keep in mind that a new home is a new home and sometimes acclimation sets in. Double check that the temps in the tank 85-90 on the cool end and 115-120 in the basking spot? These need to be checked with a DIGITAL thermometer NOT a spring style one or the sticks they do not work acurately enough. They can be picked up for less than $20 and are a must have. Are you using the AC. We just started using our AC and the temps dropped 5 degrees so I had to turn up the basking lights on ours. Keep in mind they can go a week or two sometimes w/o deficating. Stress is also a factor in there defication. If this is something that has been going on awhile have a fecal done. Parasites are a major part of the digestion process. You said that you had them for three years and the one is only 5" long. If that is nose to tip of tail and it has stayed at that size for this long there is a definite parasite problem. A three year old should be much longer than that if it is eating well and it is not parasited. You can e-mail me directly if you would like.

this can be tricky about not eating. first, they are skittish lizards and they can "freak out" about new surroundings. second, they brumate in cooler, less sunny winters in which they dont eat much or at all for several weeks and consequently dont defecate. third, it could be a GI parasite which can occur with imports and with temperatures that are too low. if there is weight loss and runny, foul-smelling feces...likely the parasite. need to see a vet and get fecal exam and ? antibx but be careful.....vets that are not that experienced may tell you to force feed and give antibx and it may simply be winter shut down (brumation). look at the symptoms.
