I am searching for a screen top for a 75 gallon tank. The dims are 48"x18" I have found the plain metal, but wondering if they make them hinged lengthwise. Anyone know?

we never found a screen lid for a 75 gallon, so we built our own...it's hinged and took less than a day to build...

yes, I could post pics shortly...we used wood that came 1/2"X 3 feet or so...hubby might know for sure...we also used screen material we picked up at Lowes...the kind you would use for a screen window, we got the aluminum because we originally thought his basking light would sit on it...the aluminum can take the heat...we used small hinges-they're 1 inch long...the tank (75 gallon)is bisected down the middle with hard plastic...so we made one half of the tank a screen that fills half the tank top, the other end we divided into two and actually made two screens one hinged and the other not since we thought his lamp would sit there...we will eventually make another screen top that will replace those two so the tank will actually have two screen covers, each half the tank length, figure it would be sturdier than just one very big one and I usually don't need the whole top open...we used a piece of that same wood and attached that with screws to the plastic that runs around the top of the tank (it protrudes from the side of the tank 1/2" into the tank)we then mounted the hinge to that as well as the screen top...the screen top is recessed into the tank 1'2" so the whole top of the tank is level...pics will help in understanding...sorry so long...

don't apologize - that's great! This tank also has the hard plastic across the short distance. Unfortunately, the people who had it before, placed a light on that "bar" and melted it (big time!), but hey - we've all melted something in our setup at some point, right! I JUST (like an hour ago) melted my strip light with Darwin's basking light b/c I was NOT paying attention where it was laying when I had him out - ugh!

Ooooh...can I play? I once melted the entire middle of Gordo's cage (the support beam). I had taken him and his cage items out for cleaning and didn't pay attention to where I put his light back. I think everyone's melted something at one point in time...but it sure does make you feel dumb! Anyway...I too can't wait to see the pics. Good luck on making the top lele!

That's a good idea. At some time or another...melting something is just bound to happen. I haven't started a fire...yet. I've been extremely careful since that little incident. Since we're talking about melting stuff and I don't mind being completely embarrassed...In my old house...the stove and the washer were right next to each other and I have a horrible habit of forgetting to turn the burner off...well you can guess what happened. When I came back to get the laundry....the bottom of the basket had completely melted on the burner! I had to pry it off with a spatula! I'll never in a million years live that one down. You know...it is a wonder I haven't started a fire yet!

i came home from work and my girlfriend had cleaned the cages inside and out....i noticed a lack of light coming from the cage...then saw that she left one of the basking lights on the carpeted floor.....and yes, the light was still on. i quickly picked up the light and there was a smoking black circle. i poured water on it. it was a close one! and only cost $100 off of our security deposit for the apartment....oh the joys

I went through two of three burner covers for my stove before I stopped using them, kept forgetting to remove them before turning the burner on...

once caught my mothers toaster on fire with a brown sugar pop tart...the icing cuaght fire...flames shooting out the top of toaster...I picked it up and threw it out the back door...thank god I noticede before her wall went up...

lol I once caught my hair on fire...back in the 80's when hairspray was the thing...my husband, myself and my two year old boy had been at the book store...I put my wrist through the handle of the bag...went to light a smoke...wind blew my hair...hair went up in flames...I could see it out of the corner of my eye...meanwhile I'm hitting myself in the head with my hand in attepmts to put the fire out...the back of books hit me a few good times...got it out...looked around and didn't see the husband...him and the kid were far ahead...didn't even notice...burnt off like 3inches of hair...just realized how dippy I seem to be now...lol

I burnt the top of my son's dresser by (stupidly) setting the basking light on it to rearrange the cage. duh! Now his dresser has a nice black spot on it. Ya live and learn!
