Got my sav today.....

kevinBD1 Jun 09, 2005 03:15 PM

I finished modifying his cage last night. He is about 2 feet long and i have him in a cage that is 4'x3' and 2 feet tall. The only problem i came to when building the cage was after i was finised there were two corners where from top to bottom there is a one inch gap, after panicking, i realized those two margins could serve as ventilation spots, and there is no way that size sav could squeeze through a one inch wide space, i dont think. I had to carry him home in a small dog crate, and when i got home i opened the crate door and set the crate in the cage and let him come out when he felt like it. So far all is good, he is exploring, digging, basking, all of the typical monitor stuff. By the way Scott, his weight problem is now undercontrol after i chewed out some of the employees.

Um.....why did you build such a small cage for it. If it's already 2 foot long, why didn't you just build an enclosure for an full grown adult? I'm just not seeing the logic behind that decision when he'll outgrow it pretty soon.

I didnt build a totally new cage. I took an old iguana cage and modified it. I am well aware of how big savs get, and i am also well aware of the fact that i will need to build a bigger cage fairly soon when he outgrows this one.

Is it the bigger one that was under the half log or the smaller one?
I am not certain, but I think the bigger one was a female.
My memory aint that great so I could be wrong.
You might want to check it out before you give the critter a name.

Hey Scott,

It was the bigger one under the log. She seems to be doing great. I got her Thursday, and I have offered her a mouse twice from tongs but she hasnt taken them, but I consider that normal for now since i just got her in the new environment. She has been moving around a lot, coming out to bask, digging here and there, typical monitor things. Now I have a question for you, I need to make a couple more modifications to her cage, filling in some cracks, which will require a drill/shrill noise, should I hold off on making the modifacations?? or go ahead?? what would you do??

Do you remember the rubbermaid tub I had in my truck?
Those work great for a temporary home while you make adjustments or do major cage cleaning.
I fill them halfway with cypress much and stick the lizard in it to keep them from getting stressed or destorying the house if they were just let out to roam while I did what ever needed to be done.
Stick it in a quiet room and get to work.

Ok sounds good to me. The thing w/ feeding, I used a little bit of common sense and figured out that, she is not gonna take food from me, until she is comfortable with me. And it is quite obvious she is not comfortable with me yet. So I think I'm gonna get some prekilled fuzzies and throw them in there, and she should come across them when she goes exploring, which she has been doing VERY often. Sound good?? or have u got something that may work a bit better?? The mouse crawling around on her and stuff live seems to kinda stress her right now since shes in a new home.

Forget fuzzies, get some adult mice. Stick the dead suckers in a bowl near her favorite hide, then leave.
Do the same thing with some large dusted roaches.

Great. Her cage is in my room w/ the rest of my herps(chameleon, pacman frog) totally enoclosed except for ventilation holes and the spot where the heat lamp is. And my room is at the far end of the house, and the door to it is always closed. So there is not much noise or much of anything to be stressed about. Let me know next time you might be in the area of Gadsden, and maybe you can come by and see my setup.
