Please help with Ouchita Map Turtles

sandfireman Jun 09, 2005 04:27 PM

Hi, I have two baby Ouchita Map Turtles. I was wondering if somebody could give me a list of healthy things to feed them. How often to feed them? They need a UVB light right? Also, how deep should the water be, i heard they like it fairly deep. I dont have a UVB light yet so ive been taking them outside and letting them bask for an hour or a day. What type of greens are safe for them? One more thing, on this turtle dock that i bought there is some clear flem like substance building up on it, what the hell is this, i wiped it off, i hate it so much, any help would be appreciated?

Thanks, chris

The clear substance is bacterial slime, a gel produced by certain bacteria to protect their colonies. It is common in normally "dirty" turtle habitats and is not harmful to the turtles (unless you let the tank get really foul). In fact, too aggressvie sterilization can lead to bacterial and fungal imbalances that can lead to the growth of really harmful organisms in some cases.
