Better Bedding

Basilisk15 Jun 09, 2005 05:43 PM

Since the people on Repticzone.com tend to take a while to respond to posts, i'll ask here. What's better bedding for tree frogs? potting soil, Bed-A-Beast, Echo-earth, or the bedding I have, now? (which is paper towls with some moss on the left side for humidity needs).

Paper towels are very practical, and work extremely well for tree frogs as long as they are changed often. Bed-a-beast and eco earth are the same thing: coconut husk fiber. It holds moisture well, is cheap, and is usually safe if accidentally ingested. Commercially available potting soil mixes aren't usually a good substrate because they often contain perlite, vermiculite, or added chemicals that have potential to be harmful to amphibians.

I agree with the last post but if you have a naturalistic setup (and you should since the frog will like it better) don't use papertowels. bed-a-beast or similar products are fine plus you can grow live plants in the stuff. snake plants (sansiveria) are great for white's since the leaves withstand the frog's weight. you can mix bark nuggets that are large enough not to be swallowed in with the substrate too. cork bark glued to the wall to hide behind is a good idea. the water will get 'dirty' in a natural setup but the water should be changed every day anyway.
