feeding adult iguanas

yavannaus Jun 09, 2005 06:07 PM

I've read both; that they need to be fed every day and that they should be fed every other day. Which is the best? I would asume that an ig in the wild would graze everyday. What does everyone here do? I've been feeding every other day, and I give her a bit more than I would if I was feeding every day.

Also, how often does everyone elses ig use the bathroom? The past four or five days, Oscar has been going like 2 or 3 times a day. A few weeks ago, she was going only once a day and using her pool to go in. Now, she is just going where ever. Is this her saying that she's mad at me or something? Could I be feeding her too much? Grrr. I love her to death, but geez, the clean-up is getting tiring. I've gone thru more paper towels than you would believe!

I have always fed Ozzy every day. Sometimes 2-3 times a day. I would say each feeding is about 2 cups. Hes a good eater as you can see. LOL I free feed all my animals, so basically i keep his bowl full at all times and then he decides when he wants to eat.
My understanding is you can not overfeed a iguana. As far as going potty, he does that about every other day, just depends. And some days he does go twice. Hope that helps. Tami

Oh dear.......please, please feed your Ig fresh food every day. You cannot really overfeed an Iguana.

G'Kar gets 2 cups of greens, almost a cup of slivered, chopped fruits and veggies, alfalfa, and fresh water every day. If the food starts to look wilted or dry I replace it with fresh.

He eats a lot, so he pottys 3 times a day. Once in his bath and then twice in other areas. He has a few favorite areas he likes to poop in and once I discovered them they were all lined with small pieces of wee wee pads. It's a nice easy clean up with the pads. I bought tons of pads on eBay for very little.

These routines did not happen over night. It was trial and error and LOTS of patience ......just like having a baby. But once G'Kar trained me the right way......I am able to care for him the way a King should be cared for. I also had a lot of help from of course the Iguanas for Dummies book and other Ig owners.

Happily Enslaved to Green Iguana Master G'Kar ~~24/7~~

Yep, that's what i thought....
The big problem is that i have too many animals! Three fish tanks, 2 millipedes, a tarantula, 2 iguanas and 2 cats; and not nearly all the time i need to give them all what i feel is enough attention. I talked to one of the aquarist at this aquarium in Denver that i'm going to be volunteering at, and they said that they would gladly take the fish off my hands. ~sigh of relief~ That will help tremendously. I will then be able to sell my 55 gal and 10 gal set-up. That will give me room to get the cage i want for the iggs, and hopefully make life a bit easier.
I'm so happy for my oscar cichlids; they are going to have such a great home at the aquarium!

Thanks for your help!
