Help Identify South Central PA Turtle

Liann Jun 09, 2005 06:57 PM

Found this little guy (actually shell is about 9-12" long) in my yard just a few minutes ago. I've been looking at several websites, but am not sure what he is. Any ideas?

Here is the head:

That is a common snapping turtle...she was probably up to nest, hopefully she was able to safely. If you saw her digging, you could protect the nest with a wire basket, just as long as the holes are big enough for the babies to get out of. Nice pics!

I will keep an eye out for a nest. Would she try to stay close to the water? We have a creek running through the front part of our property and that is where she was coming from. I didn't see her this morning, but there is an area of brush that she may be hiding in or have laid eggs in. If I can find them, I will put something (wire like mentioned) around them to protect the little guys. Thanks for the ID. We were leaning towards a snapper, but weren't sure. I still cannot get over how big she was!!!

they can get bigger than that, it's also amazing how tiny they start out, I found a nickle sized snapper hatchling just the other day.
