Getting a red eyed tree frog...Got a few Questions.....

heffner2212 Jun 10, 2005 02:06 AM

Ok well I was planning on setting up my 29 gallonj high tank. I was wondering if I could use sand as a substrate? I want a substrate that bugs cannot hide in. Then I will put a clibing branch and a water bowlin in there. Also can anyone help me out witrh feeding I am not sure exactly how much and how often to feed? One more thing. If i get a whites tree frog of the same size can they be housed together? I was probably going to get both from lllreptile.com
thanks alot

ps: Is it ok If they are kept constatly at around 78 degrees.?

Sand will stick to the frogs and they will have a hell of a time in it. Try a mixture of sand and soil and orchid bark.

Do NOT mix white's with ANYTHING except another big white. They eat EVERYTHING and ANYTHING they can somehow squeeze into their bodies and are notorious for eating red eyes. My girlfriend lost a green tree frog to her white and they weren't that different in size.

definitely don't mix species. these frogs have different requirements, not counting the size difference. redeyes need higher humidity and are stalkers. white's are aggressive feeders.
there are plenty of books and websites out there that you should check. if this is your first frog get a white's for now and see how it goes. they are alot easier to keep. just ensure the tank is ready to go before the frog arrives. they need some hiding places to go where you can't stare at them all day long since they are nocturnal. redeyes won't come out until the lights are out. white's are more active at dusk.
