Building a Rack and was wondering if stain is toxic...

Python Dreams Jun 10, 2005 01:41 PM

I have a few Boaphile racks and I want to make a rack to match since I waited to long to order the Rhino Rack. I have built an 18 drawer shoe box rack. It is near built and I am trying to decide wether I should add belly heat or back heat? It is made of 1/2" Birch plywood. Each shelf is sealed with filler. I have iron-on oak sides to cover up how the plywood looks on the sides that I will be adding tommorrow. This is where the really important question comes in. I wanted it to match my other Boaphiles, so I stained it slate gray that looks black (Behr Outdoor Stain). Tommorrow I will resand and restain the rack because it creates a much smoother surface. CAN THE STAIN BE TOXIC TO THE HATCHLINGS? I did not even think about this when I started, I just assumed it can withstand high heats and high humididity. Any help would be greatly appreciated since this rack is starting to look good, I don't want to put anymore time into it if I have to scrap it.
Thanks,
Tom

Tom, All I know is stain Lingers on forever. If you use stain try and use a water-based stain. Smell doesn't last as long! I used paint for all of my racks. Let them all dry for 4-5 days and added the animals.. I honestly cant say wether or not the stain will affect your animals. Sorry Bro!
