Anyone know of a detailed guide to probing I could follow?

RyanT Jun 10, 2005 04:39 PM

The probes I ordered arrived today. Time to find out for sure what sex my 6 babies are. I believe them to all be female but I need to know, without a doubt. I've seen alot of snakes probed but never done it myself. Getting someone to teach me is not an option since I know no one around here that knows anything about snakes other than "Kill it" and the pet shops suck. I know the basics but I'm just wondering if anyone knows of some very detailed source I could use just to cover the little things I don't know? Like what to "feel for", well just anything that would help. I'm confident I can do it. Just wanna cover all the bases I can. Any help or comments or pointing in the right direction is extremely appreciated. Thanks alot. Ryan.

The Dr. Seward video is ok, basically it shows you were to slide the probe and when to stop and how to measure. It also shows you how to properly pop. My copy of the video sucks the tracking goes out through half of it and I tried it on several VCRs so I know it's the tape not my machine (and they don't have a dvd version). Anyway he also neglects to tell you how to choose the appropriate probe size in the video too. Best to find someone in your area that knows how to do it and have them walk you through a few probes, it's mostly by feel and you can't learn that through a video.

But I just did it and they ARE all females. Wasn't as hard as I expected it to be. By the way Tosha, congratulations on your first clutch. I'm surprised that's your first one. I assumed you were a "vet", so to speak. Awesome to see for the first time isn't it? I can't wait till next year now.

LOL - had them forever, got my first ball when I was 10 and I few more later, and I've been helping our local rescue for many years with rehabing and placing rejects so I've had hundreds with all kinds of issues throughout the years, but this is the first year I ever thought about breeding. It was actually my son that got us started and it's as much their project as it is mine. They are good about cleaning, feeding, etc. My little one was home to watch the egg laying and we recorded it for his big brother. It was cool, and it's neat to see my kids so interested and dedicated to something other than the TV and video games. Anyway - thanks - and congrat to you to for some nice lookin girls.
