Merlin's present tank has a screen top that is hinged to open long ways so that a floresent, strip light can stay undisturbed on the top of the tank. A ceramic heat emitter and a basking light rest on the front part of the screen that opens. (can you picture it? I don't have a picture uploaded but will if necessary)

Recently, I aquired a 75 gallon tank (leaker for free I got a regular screen for it because I was told they do not make a hinged screen for that big a tank. I was wondering if I bought a piano hinge and cut the screen in half, would it work or would it break down as time went on?

I have a 75 gallon...had the same problem...built my own screen top, hinged, took less than a day...if you look below there are pics I posted...

I, too have a 30 gal with the lengthwise hinged screen top and I really like it. I JUST got a 75 gal leaky tank (not for free but with a stand and strip light for $65!). I JUST posted below with the same question! Weird...we must be cyber buddies - or at least our beardies are! lol!
