Scroll down this forum and you will find some. They range all the way from almost jet black to having plenty of pattern with various shades of brown and grey. Mike Joliff can get you just about any kind you want and his animals are awesome. Duffy

for black rats depends on what part of the country your in. They can range in color pattern even within their own respective state. Here in Virginia, this would be a good/typical example of what a black rat usually looks like. Va. black rats usually are very black with litte to almost no pattern.

Not sure if this is typical or not for the state, but look at the redish color between the black. Another example of an adult black Rat.

Not sure if this is typical for SC or not, but here's an adult with pattern. Very jet black saddles on this one, but the background color never got dark enough to turn this one into a solid black animal.

I have seen that series of pics before and they are amazing. Was there any info. on how big that snake was?Looks average sized, but thats a great example of how large a prey item a snake can take.

Here's another example of a normal adult, unknown locality, that's showing yellowish color between the scales. Look at this guy, and then remember the redish color on the Iowa specimen. I'm telling you these blackrats have all kinds of neat colors/patterns througout their range, and we're just talking "Normal" black Rats.

Link to a picture of a Kentucky Black Rat. This is somewhat typical of Black Rats in Ky. This photo is from the Kentucky Herpetological Society. Also Brian (HotShot) and Phil (Sweet Pea) post many Ky Black rats on this forum. Check out their pics of ones they've found, as well as ones in their personal collection. You can see just between Virginia and Ky what a huge difference there is in what is considered "NORMAL".

>>here are a few pictures.
Several of these I just posted recently but I will post again so you don't have to scroll through the old posts.
Both of the snakes pictured (if you can tell the difference) are from Hamilton County in Southeast Tennessee.
The first couple of pictures are of the one I caught a couple of weeks ago and decided to keep.

.
these next two are of a nice specimen I caught last year but decided to release

This is a yearling (the pic was taken last September or so) from Newark, DE, swallowing a mouse. Up here they're pretty much all black (maybe because there aren't many other snakes here that they can integrade with). I posted this pic so you could see how the juvenile pattern is still visible when the skin stretches out, while the rest of the animal is very dark, with only remnants of the pattern. This animal is closer to two years old now, and looks like his pattern has disappeared until he eats (he's on adult mice now).

Here is my male Bullitt county KY locale black rat. He is a W/C 01 snake and right at or just over 6'....

Here is my male Saline county MO locale black rat, he is probably a 3 year old snake and right around 3.5 - 4' and losing his pattern quickly. (camera flash makes it look more visible than it actually is). He should turn jet black, just like the black rats on the eastern board....

And here is my female Saline county MO locale black rat. Notice the reds between her scales? This seems to be the norm in MO. The black rats get jet black, but retain lots of red between the scales on the sides and some have huge amounts of red blotches on the bellies along with the black blotches. Makes for a very attractive snake!!

Here in KY, they are highly variable, having lots of yellows, browns, blacks, greys, and greenish coloring!!! You never know what coloration of a black rat you will flip out here!!
