Minwax Water-based Polycrylic?

Nicodemus Jun 11, 2005 09:34 AM

I'm planning on sealing a wood and plexiglass tree frog habitat.
Is the mixwax polycrylic ok?

I like Polycrylic but would not use it in a Tree Frog habitat. It's a very easy to apply product but it does not do well with constant exposure to moisture.

An oil-based poly would work okay but the offgassing time could be weeks if not months.

If you don't mind spending more Envirotex Lite will work well. It's a pour-on epoxy for bar tops.

Would the minwax polyurethane work better?
I'm not too worried about out gas time.

By the way, do the spray cans make much of a difference? I saw those today and I was wondering if they do in fact dry fast like the can says...

Regular minwax would work better, although I can't say with any certainty that it will be a lifetime finish. But better than the water-based, no doubt.

Assuming the spray cans are oil-based, that might be a wise choice. One problem with regular oil-based poly is that novices like ourselves often brush it on much too thick. This can be a disaster with oil-based.

With a thinned, spray on poly it is unlikely that any coat will be too thick.

So check and see if you can find a spray on finish that is oil/solvent based.

If not, and you decide to use regular Minwax, I recommend thinning it down and wiping it on. Put on several THIN coats.

I can't stress the thin part enough.

Another option might be spray on cannisters of a pre-catalyzed lacquer. I can buy these at a local paint specialty store.
