Need ID on garter snake!

r2_ Jun 11, 2005 10:03 AM

Hello. I found this garter upon a herp hunt yesterday. It's about 13" long, was under a metal board. It's very calm now, but tried to strike when I caught it. It's in a critter keeper aquarium right now with soil, a fair amount of worms, a nice hiding place and a water dish big enough for it to have a nice swim in. It was caught in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and is a native species. I'd like to know the exact ID, thanks.

Unless I'm mis-reading the range maps, the only one that occurs there is the nominate form, Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis, the Eastern Garter Snake.

Found 2 more snakes today!

First, an adult red bellied snake.

Now, a bigger eastern garter snake!
