Egg Laying Question

mikdundee Jun 11, 2005 10:22 AM

My female bearded dragon keeps dropping 1-5 eggs all around her cage on a daily basis. All seem to be infertal (sp?) About 2 months ago she laid a clutch of 11 eggs and has contiued to leave more every day. Should I be concerned or is this normal? I have other females that have laid eggs and once they lay the clutch I don't see anymore until the next clutch is laid.

Thank you,

If your female is dropping eggs all over the place, it's because she doesn't have a good place to lay her eggs and is trying to hold on to them. It isn't healthy for her to be holding eggs back, as this can cause impaction. Best thing to do is prepare a proper egg laying bin and set her up in it to lay her eggs. A rubbermaid type container filled with vermiculate and clean sand/soil and moistened so it clumbs nicely but when squeezed water doesn't drip out. Depth should be about 8-12". Use a clamp lamb to heat the sand and you can start a tunnel to encourage her to dig and lay eggs.

yes, be concerned. if she is dropping a few here and there on surface...she does not have a suitable nest. you may say, "so what if she lays them" but she can hold them in and they can adhere to one another leading to dystocia or being "egg bound" and that is lethal frequently. she needs a large 12" deep dirt container. the dirt needs to be diggable to excavate a nest chamber and wont collapse in if she digs. it should be moist but not wet and the temp ideally is around 83 degrees F inside of it. I lost a monitor female from this complication last year and monitors are the hardiest of lizards. get on it! good luck!
