Calcium For Dart Frogs

firenewt88 Jun 11, 2005 02:08 PM

What is the best product to ensure a healthy calcium intake for dart frogs? I have two juvinile D. Azures and one D. Auratus and I have a product called Rep-Cal which is phosphorus free and has calcium enriched with vitamin D3 and claims to be safe for reptiles and amphibians. I was also wondering if vitamin D3 effects frogs like it does other amphibians and some reptiles, can they cotract vitamin D3 poisoning?
Thanks for your comments.

I answered this question to the best of my own knowledge under a later post on feeding P. terribilis.

I don't think you need to worry about vitamin D3 toxicity with these regimens. I've read reports of D2 toxicity in some frogs causing calcium carbonate deposits in the kidney tubules, but darts aren't usually getting any UV light through their tanks, so D3 is essential for their calcium metabolism.
