INCUBATORS . . . . . . . . .> . > . > . >

JaredHorenstein Jun 11, 2005 02:32 PM

I was thinking........isnt it amazing that we breed these snakes........some of which are not all that pricy......and some of which are priced thru the roof.........all of which are equally valuable to whomever is waiting for them to hatch........and yet here we are .............all of us faced with the responsibility of Designing and Building our own incubators. I did a search on google a few minutes ago.............I got a whole lot of hits on the search " reptile egg incubator" and only a couple incubator manufaturers specialize in reptile eggs...........I just find it funny.........

We breed $25,000 - $100,000 snakes..............and we incubate them in stuff we make.........but birds.......you do a bird egg incubator and there are close to a HUNDRED different kinds ...........

Crazyness...........

reptiles are slimy and ugly! LOL PETA has a heart attack over the rights of a bunny, but could care less about a rat or mouse. Hmmmm. I wonder why. Perception.

How about this one...
There are groups of people that want to do everything they can to save "every endangered species". For example, bengal tigers, despite killing a lot of people every year, need to be saved, because we think they are cute.

However, small pox, which also killed a lot of people and only exists in captivity now. It isn't being saved at all.

Why? SAVE THE SMALL POX!!

lol...I know, I know what in the hell does that have to do with ball pythons....absolutely nothing, just some food for thought.

KILLER!!!!! If you like waiting months on end to get your order. I like Boaphile racks, but I can get my racks & incubators elsewhere from people who actually deliver in a timely manner.

Boaphile won't screw you, but their customer service SUX BIGTIME!!!!!!! (and thats what it's all about).

Every order I've place with Jeff has been delivered in the time frame specified and they have all exceeded my expectations. It is the only type of caging that I use now and I have NO complaints.

Any company that receives the number of orders that Boaphile does will not always be accesible by phone 24/7, but whenever i've emailed or called I've always gotten ahold of them, or at least had my call/email returned in a timely fashion.

Sorry you had a bad experience, but I'm sure it's an isolated one. Send Jeff an email direct and let him know your beef, i'm sure he'll fix the problem.

I believe that they did have communication issues at one time, but I believe that problem has been remedied. For example: I emailed Jeff this morning at 8:30am and had a reply by lunch. Now that is turn around! If there is a problem, Jeff will fix it. No ifs ands or butts. I believe that is the KEY too good customer service!

We let some of our females incubate their own eggs. We just set the rack to about 86F in the middle of the rack and the female does the rest. We have also used the baby racks and sweater racks as incubaters with good success.

I hope Jeff is coming out with an incubator. It would coordinate with all our Boaphile racks

I think you will find that there are many more bird breeders out there than there are reptile breeders Jared, they probably outnumber us by at least 100/1. Plus the fact that bird egg incubators are very specialised; the eggs have to be rotated on a regular basis or the embryo dies. By comparison, reptile incubators are simple - find something in which you can keep a stable temperature and add a container of water. That is basically all you need to incubate reptiles and many reptile breeders can make their own incubators much better and cheaper than commercially made ones. Eric

I know MANY people who are afraid of or don't like snakes...
while I only know 2-3 people afraid of birds.
Personally, I'd take 1,000 snakes over a bird anyday.
Snakes are much cooler.

"Personally, I'd take 1,000 snakes over a bird anyday."

NO DOUBT ! A single bird is capable of driving you insane!
Case in point...My sister has a small cockatiel colony. Those babies are always hungry!(Very loud)
I usually have to come up with a reason to leave.lol

..not a peep outta my herp room though.

I've always wondered. Do you have to use tongs and put scraps in their mouths? Sounds fun, but labour-intensive.

"I've always wondered. Do you have to use tongs and put scraps in their mouths? Sounds fun, but labour-intensive."

Tongs are optional...it all depends on how well your herps eat. Generally, there are no scraps...lol j/k.

I bred African Silver Grey parrots until a short time ago, and fed the babies directly into their crops using syringes with soft plastic tubing attached.

jyohe Jun 12, 2005 08:43 AM

you use specially fomulated food and mix it with water....and use a syringe to "squirt" feed it into the birds' mouth / throat......many times a day......over and over and over again....day after day after day........

no........I don't do it and don't want to try......birds are too hungry and time consuming......

Yep Jyoye, that's the way it's done. Day after day after day. It's a dedication!!

Or maybe not!

What little you appear to know about rearing birds Jared! I've lost count of the number of different species of birds and animals that I have bred and reared over the past 50 years - including monkeys!

JaredHorenstein Jun 12, 2005 11:17 AM

I worked for the Parrot Jungle & Gardens back in the day......

Yuck.......who in theor right mind would chew up that crap for a bird.........not me...

She doesn't really put alot of effort into it.The parents are the ones feeding the babys(only one or two at a time, per pairing).
..and when they are getting fed...they sound kinda like squeaky disc brakes.

Charles, you can't get hand-reared parrots by letting the parents rear them. By the way, who is the 'she' referred to in "She doesn't really put alot of effort into it"?? Eric Davies

coldthumb Jun 12, 2005 08:26 PM

heya Eric,..I was responding to jeff's response to my post...

"She" is my sister.

Be neat to get a miniDV shot of the action.

jeff favelle Jun 11, 2005 04:54 PM

Incubating Ball Python eggs has to be the single EASIEST thing on the planet. A BP egg that is destined to live is pretty damn hard to kill. Nay, next to impossible. A monkey could incubate BP eggs.

The trick is getting healthy, fertile eggs. I don't care if its a $50 egg or a $50,000 egg, they all incubate the same. And they are damn easy. Same reason we don't have $10,000 water systems. Fill up the deli cup, snake is watered. Don't sweat the easy parts of the operation. Concentrate on the harder parts.
