Lobster Roaches as a replacment for crickets??

joshbrees Jul 13, 2003 07:43 PM

I am getting my first crested gecko from a friend of mine who breeds. He is also giving me a starter colony of lobster roaches. What kind of nutritional comparison is there between lobster roaches and crickets? Has anyone had experence with lobster roaches and cresteds or with leopards? Will proper nutrition needs be meet if lobsters are feed with the occasional cricket accompanied with some baby food? Speeking of baby food can you guys give me some tips on kind, how to offer it, how much, and general stuff like that. I have only kept carniverous lizards before and never had experence with anything other then feeding insects. Any tips or advice you have for a beginer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time
Josh

I don't have any experience with roaches, but as far as the baby food is concerned, my cresteds favorite flavors are apricot, peach, and banana. Nutiritional supplements such as calcium and vitamins can be mixed in. A shallow dish, such as the lid from the a jar of baby food works great for offering the food. A small spoon can also be used to hand feed the geckos if you feel this is necesary. If you are at all concerned whether or not the geckos are eating the baby food out of the lid, hold a small spoon full of the food under the geckos nose. It should begin lapping at the food within a few seconds. This hand feedng technique is often necesary with babies but usually isn't necesary as the gecko grows older.

I had a colony of lobster roaches a while back and they worked great as a staple for my crested, but be warned....they breed like freakin CRAZY! I ended up with WAY too many for one crested and got rid of them after I switched my cresty over to the CGD.
