Difference in appearance between Amel Corn & Creamsicle

Passport Jul 13, 2003 08:07 PM

My neighbor purchased an "orange cornsnake" from the lfs today. He was told it was a cornsnake. I'm wondering if it could be a Creamsicle because it doesn't look like my amel corns. There is no yellow at all on this snake and no white either. Just cream color and peachy color. Is there a way to confirm by looking what this yearling male truly is? Would a picture help? I took a few of it today. Thanks.

I may be way off base here but that looks a lot more like an albino rat snake then an amel corn or creamsicle corn.
Check out the head. Where is the typical "Y" on the head.
here is a picture of a cream and one of an amel. check the heads.

Cream

amel

On the corns the V starts between and slightly in front of the eyes and contiunues back to the neck.
The picture shown has a line that is broken by the eye. I beleive this would indicate rat snake.
sorry if I am off base here but that is what I think to be correct.

I tend to agree with your assessment. It sure isn't an Amel in my book. I just figured Creamsicle. But albino rat rings even truer. Because in the same enclosure they had a little normal ratsnake. Too bad that the lfs doesn't even know what it has for sale. I hope several others will post comments regarding their opinion of this little guy. He is very calm and been handled a lot since the store had it for 3-4 months before it sold. The new owner is an 11yr old boy who plans to be an Anaconda specialist when he grows up. (How cute is that?) This is his first snake and a very nice one at that. However, he does need to know exactly what it is. Thanks.

The bar running through the eye and across the forehead is typical of Pantherophis o. obsoletus. The blotching is also typical of obsoletus. I'd say that what the kid has is an albino black rat snake.

It will probably turn much paler as it ages, and the blotches will "spread", so that it will end up a uniform pinkish colour. Very pretty.

Albino black rat for sure. Got a few of them myself. Great snakes but certainly not corns.
