Have any of you ever tried night vision?

Obediah2 Jun 11, 2005 10:30 PM

I got one of those night owl generation I monoculars one time, but I was just thinking it would be cool to use something that didn't magnify, just lit up a 10 yard radius. It sure seems like it would be a fun thing to try. I've never even looked through a generation III, but I would love to hear about it.

While we're dreaming - would snakes show up on a thermal imaging device, or is their temp too similar to the immediate surroundings?

I can't afford any of this stuff, and it would take a lot of the fun parts out of looking for snakes, but I would be interested to hear of anyone who had experience with this stuff.

good luck,

Jake

I don't know about snakes, but night vision works great for finding tree frogs

My brother is loaning me his night vision goggles when he gets back in the country. It occured to me to use them to try to observe my local copperhead population. Thought it might be fun and who knows what I'll see!

If you do it before I do, post your results.

neat concept but I don't believe it will work the way you hope it to mostly because snakes are cold blooded critters. They gain heat from the source they are laying on....so if you are looking at a road and the snake is on the road...unless you are on top of the snake it really won't stick out.

NVGs are pretty cool especially watching someone in a fighting position smoking a cig from 500 yards away.

I'm still waiting for the genius who invents a snake detector that you can carry with you in the woods. The concept is that it would vibrate the closer you got to a snake...the only problem is I have not figured out how the tool would pick up on the snakes presence. Have you ever taken the time to think about the # of snakes you walk pass while walking in the woods or on trails? I would definately buy one!!

Later,
Russ

I always think about that - If there could be someone watching me from a computer where I am green and every snake around is red. Its dumb, but when you're out for hours without any snakes these kind of topics come up!

Night vision goggles pick up light, not heat, so as long as the snake has eyes, you'll see it. Like I said in my post above, I use it for frogs all the time and they're ectothermic too. IR scopes pick up heat, so you're right there, I doubt it would work in most cases for snakes.
