Black Eyed Tree Frog

monocledcobra Jun 11, 2005 11:00 PM

I was at the Michigan show today in Taylor, and went to the table where the guy always has Arrow Frogs and Tree Frogs, to discuss when he would have some P.Terriblis (mint) for sale when I noticed one of his labels said "red-eye" black eye tree frog. I thought it was mislabeled and asked him about it. he said to pop open the container and grab the big female. So I did, and when it opened its eyes, SOLID BLACK. You couldn't see a pupil or anything. I dont think I've ever wanted something so badly in my life. The frog had the body of a red-eye, orange feet of a red-eye, green body of a red-eye, but BAM, solid jet black eyes.

Does anyone know if this is a morph of red-eye, or a new species, or whats the deal on them? I know the guy said he had 4 pairs at his "breeding grounds" that gave him eggs.

They are the closely related Agalychnis moreletii. They have not been imported in years. Care is nearly identical to that of red-eyed tree frogs, but they grow slightly larger and may need a larger enclosure.
