Feeding baby alligator snappers

carlsyoung Jun 11, 2005 11:10 PM

I have had common snappers my whole life but I'm new to alligator snappers. Commons have always eaten everything I've thrown in their tank form they time they were tiny hatchlings on. I have 3 6 to 7 month old allys. The only thing they will ear are live guppies and rosy reds. They will not even look twice at earthworms, dead fish, chunks of chicken. I have tried just about everything. I would like to try to vary their diet to ensure that they stay healthy. Does anyone have any suggestions?

try feeding them aquatic turtle pellet food from pet stores. be patient. sooner or later they'll come around. whats you water level in the tank. fill the tank 3/4 full and have a rock or branch they can climb to get air. they get more exercise this way. goodluck

Alot of them will only eat fish. It shouldn't be a problem, I raised one up to about 12 inches on nothing but golden shiners.

I have two Alli Snaps, they were 4 inches when I got them 3 months ago.
I feed them silversides, beef heart, cut beef and there are always live minnows swimming.
They are growing like weeds.
I wouldn't worry too much as they are friggin tanks!

Mine was picky at first also. Also would only eat guppys. I finally got him eating tetrafauna brand, "REPTOTREAT suprema, Krill enriched food sticks. It comes in a smaller size, round container with a yellow top and reddish label. They are a pecil eraser sized red floating pellet that has a strong fishy smell. they are on the soft side. All my turtles love them, but it was the first pellet food my Ally would eat. I dont believe it is a complete diet, but has 47% crude protine. One he started with that, I finally got him to eat reptomin. He is 8 months old, and almost 9 inches snout to tail! I have him swithced to worms, pinky mice, LOVES pinky mice! lots of natural calcium in those too. He also takes raw pork, and other peaple meat. One thing with pellet food, he wants it right in front of his nose, he wont chase food, except mice and peaple meat.
Good luck!
