Can boas be bred in Sterilites?

RyanT Jun 12, 2005 09:18 AM

I just had my first successful season with ball pythons. I can't believe how easy they were.(Kind of makes you wonder why they're so much more expensive than boas.)I'm sure my boas are going to take a little more "skill". I was wondering though if Sterilite boxes provide the right atmosphere. Every pic of new litters are always in custom cages. I only have mine in 4 foot Sterilites right now. Just trying to predict how difficult things are really gonna be in a few months. Thanks for any comments. Ryan.

The smallest male boas might be able to be kept in a 4 foot tub. Maybe! Females will outgrow those tubs for sure. they will usually reach 8 feet and 10 feet is not uncommon. You wouldn't even be able to close the drawer with her and a mate inside. Some breeders do use 4 foot vissions for there smaller boas but more room is always better.

I know they couldn't be kept in there their whole lives. I'm planning on buying some Boaphiles or AP's next year. But for now, they're fine in the Sterilites. My male super salmon is a little over 5 feet, my male ghost is less than 4 and my female pastel is pushing 7. I'm just wondering if I'll have any success trying to breed them this season in the Sterilites. Has it been/can it be done? Or would I be fighting a losing battle, so to speak? Bottom line, is it possible? That should be clear enough.

Ryan-
Im not sure you are approaching this animal ownership with the right atitude. First off if you have a 7 foot female in a 4 foot sterilite cage your first priority should be to get that girl some more room. Sterilites are great for the yearling boas and neonates but once they get that large you really NEED to find them somewhere bigger. Now can you breed a 7 foot female and a 5 foot male in one 4 foot sterilite...Well I would say no because there isnt enough space for the female to move about the cage and females when being breed are very temperature dependant. I would say that a sterilite will not offer the array of temperatures that the female will need as well as the space for the male to retreat when the female is "a little grumpy". In my opinion you have other things to worry about before you worry about breeding. Get some bigger cages by Fall and then you will be ready to breed. But i think you are fighting an uphill battle to breed in a tank that small.

Sincerely,
Rose Hipskind

YES!! I bred my hogs last year in the same size sterilite, although it was the 30'' tall. don't listen to the other post's a 4' sterilite has almost the same floorspace as a 4' boafile cage; maybe try the taller sterilite though.

I've been doing this "animal (snake) ownership" thing for oh, 20 years now so I'm pretty confident I can judge the space they have fairly well. You're right K. They do have almost an equal amount of floor space as a custom cage. And I'm positive they're more comfortable than alot of others I see housed in the same type of enclosure. I was just wondering because I always see babies being born in big cages if it's even possible or worth trying to breed them in plastic boxes. Thanks for the input.

Do whats best for the boas, not whats best for your wallet.

I had 37 babies to prove you dead wrong!!!!!!!!!!! And the mother was 6 ft long an 15 lbs an the father was a bit over 4 ft!From start to finish with one huge healthy litter! An its only been 5 an half months an mom has put back on the weight an then some an ready for september to get here!I am not bragging, but it saddens me to hear others jump on others when some of the largest breeders out their will tell you that they all started out with aquariums an home made enclosiers! Some still use aquariums for breeding purposes still today!Just because one doesnt have the money to buy a boaphile or a vision doesnt mean they dont love an care for their boa an their well being! If a boaphile is 4ft2ft12in an the big reptile tubs are over 4ft2ft15in,why cant one breed in it??I am just trying to understand this discussion it make no sence!Well anyways Id just keep your albino or youll be calling me for my address for shipping purposes!Heres another pic!Eveyone enjoy their evening!Eric[Hypoboa]
