Introducing a new tokay...

razordance Jun 12, 2005 10:17 AM

We have a single tokay in about a 30 gal tank, and it seems a little large for him (or her, I have no idea). We'd like to get another to put in with him, but I was advised by a pet store employee that unless they were together from the very beginning, it can't be safely done. Is there a way to put a second gecko in the tank without them hurting each other. Doing it on neutral territory isn't really an option as Fang does everything he can to avoid being picked up, and once we get him out, we can't really put him down or I suspect he'll run for the nearest wall. Any ideas, or should we just leave him alone? Also, are there any other species which would be able to live peacefully in the tank with him? Thanks.

Tokay's are known for being pretty nasty biters. I wouldn't put another tokay in there unless you are sure about the genders...2 males will = 1 live male and 1 dead male (or 2 dead tokays). They also don't play well with others, so nothing else should be put in with them. I have personally seen 1 tame (handlable) tokay EVER and it was grossly obese, I think it was too fat & sluggish to actually try to bite or get away. I never handled mine except once to show my students why they shouldn't put their hands in their cage...lesson learned and I only bled for 15 minutes or so. They make fascinating pets!
