What is the difference between a Suriname and a Guyana?

silenthill Jun 12, 2005 12:57 PM

Are they the same boa or not. I remember reading from this one site that they are the same boa, just called different because of political boundries. When I look at the two I can see that their different so I don't belive they are the same. What do you guys think?

i had a breeder tell me a wild caught female in suriname had a liter of babies he saw and some were pinkish and some were purplish.

do both suri's and guyana's have color (dark and light) phases? i have a boa that i bought as a suri...that in light has some pink and (to me) looks like a suri and while in dark...has some purple and looks like a guyana.

i don't have a dark phase pic, but here is a pic of her in light. opinions?

There may be a differance between the two but... Boas are collected from Suriname and Guyana and they will be sent to the U.S. from witch ever is open to exporting at that time. A shippment form Guyana will have Boas that were collected from both countries along with boas that travle from one country to the other. So really what we think are guyanas may be surinames. There is no way to tell them appart

Yes, they are the same animal B.C.C. I believe in keeping localities straight and guys like me and Gus Renfro and a few others are seemingly becoming a dieing breed. However, If you do not know that a Suriname came from Suriname and a Guyana came from Guyana, it is very hard to tell the difference. There are some pockets of Jungle here and there that seem to exhibit different characteristics in pattern and in color, but for the most part, it can all be found in both areas. There was a very respected Herper that is currently writing a book on localities that came by an importer friend of mines place, that had just received a shipment of boas. The author, started pulling boas out of the bag and started boastfully telling us were each one came from and would bet his life that he could tell you by just looking at their patterns and colors. When he was through giving his educational sermon, my buddy looked at him laughing and told him that all the boas, not only came from Guyana, but came from the same Island on the Essiquibo!! Needless to say, it was a humbling experiance for the author.........Johnson Herp

Yes, all that has been stated is very true. The place of collection as opposed to the country of export. Guyanan looking boas being born in Suriname litters and vice versa. Just an idea here. By appearence I have always thought that a Guyanan should have the darker/purple color with deeper burgandy tails. The Surinames have the pink color with pronounced bat wing saddles, and brighter red tails. As with green tree pythons where a "type" is assigned by appearence rather than locale, would it be proper to say "Guyana Type" or "Suriname Type" by appearence if the exact locale can't be certified? Or do you think this would muddy the waters even more? Just a thought on this and I welcome your thoughts and opinions. Take care-Bill
