RE: Blue tegus are from outer space

Rollin Jul 13, 2003 08:47 PM

Wow I'm jealous; I wish I could go down there. There are actually some bigger types of tegus that aren't even sold here in the US. Maybe you could bring some back . I'd be interested in one if you do. Especially Tupinambis quadrilineatus; they get over 3 feet long. Maybe you'll consider going to this place in Brazil they have em there.

Tupinambis quadrilineatus (I like these guys!)

Tupinambis duseni (closely related to reds)

And of course Callopistes flavipunctatus (fake monitor, monitor tegu, or Peruvian Tegu) from Peru

And you know there are probably other species of tegus yet to be discovered (recognized by science).

Great links! I absolutely love the 2nd pic of the dusani (red tegu) It has yellow markings like a gila monster or beaded lizrds. Have you heard of any being able to be legally imported into the USA?

Hey welcome back Greg, good to hear from you again. I did extensive internet searches on Tupinambis duseni and Tupinambis quadrilineatus but couldn't find much at all. I didn't find anything that said they were endangered either. I don't know if it's illegal to export them but I was just reading something that said they've been letting visitors take animals out with them. I would buy one for a reasonable price if I thought I might help to pass the species on to future herp keepers. Just think of all the people that would enjoy one of these in our generation and the ones that will follow us. I'm just considering how much I enjoy my tegus and that they are one of the smartest lizards in the world. We are extremely lucky that we even have the Blue tegu. There is another type of large tegu in Brazil that I couldn't even find a picture of; Tupinambis longilineus. If anyone can find any other pics of these obscure tegus I'd like to see them. Here's another pic of T. duseni.

Thank you for the websites and great picture. I will look into visiting that place in Brazil. I would hightly doubt that I will be bringing any animals back, but you never know.
