Substrate in racks?

BRYAN139 Jun 12, 2005 10:03 PM

Okay, what do all the guys use for substrate with large racks? Right now I'm using paper towles. It's not that expensive and I can feed in the racks which saves tons of time. The only problem is spot cleaning. I can't spot clean. I have to take the snake out, put it in a different container, take everything out, and change the paper towels everytime. I want to go to something like aspen where I can spot clean but then I have to remove the snakes to feed becaue of the chance of impaction from them swallowing substrate which makes it take longer because some of them take longer to choke down a small rat than it takes me to change tyhe paper towels. So what do the guys with 100 snakes in huge racks use? What can I use that will allow me to spot clean but still not make feeding take forever?

I use Newspaper in all my cages save for the lizard cages I mean snake cages. My racks included infact most of my cages are built around newspaper dimensions. My new hatchling rack isn't but I can make do with a paper cutter. Honestly I don't mind removing the snake to do cleanings it gives me one on one time with a large collection that can be next to impossible. Also I get newspaper for free, I don't subscribe but a lot of people do so just ask them to save the paper in a basket and you clean out the basket every so often. Just think you're recycling, cause if you weren't going to reuse that paper it would still be trash!

When you say "big racks", if you mean that the cages/ tubs are actually big, I'd say go with newspaper. You'll pretty much just have to take the snake out no matter what. If you just mean lots of tubs, I'd say use aspin. You can get huge bags for really cheap (esp at shows), and I personally, and many people I know, have never had a problem with impaction. Although, to be safe, a good idea is to make sure that the food item is nice and dry, so that no substrate sticks to it while going down. I used to think that aspin would be more of a pain til I saw a friend of mine keep over 2,000 snakes, 95% of them on aspin.
