Hey therebeldragon -

I looked at these photos on the photo gallery before seeing your post here- I had narrowed the possibilities down to American taod or Western Toad- and since the first is an east coast toad and the latter is a west coast toad, I looked at your profile and if you caught this in CA it is most likely a Western toad, unless it is a rare variant my field guide doesn't show...

Where did you catch it?

Thanks for helping, I found it in my friends backyard. It war all dirty, it came out of a hole in the back that seemed to belong to a gopher.

LOL- no, I meant what state/county are you in? Mountain region, habitat with water, desert?

More clearly- American toads are ONLY found (according to my Audubon Field Guide) East of the Mississippi, so I feel doubtful that's what you caught in CA, where your profile says you're from...although anything is possible...

I'm sure there are more expert toad researchers than me around here who could state specific criteria for ID'ing it...

is what I think aka Fowler's toad, Woodhouse's toad etc...

doesn't look like an American toad to me. there are other better possibilities, esp. if you are in the western US. why did you catch the toad? you should let the toad go where it will be safe from cats/dogs. it definitely needs some 'dirt' to dig in and some good hiding places.

I only said it was an American toad because thats what someone on kingsnake chat told me. Anyways, I live in a desert area, with some hills around. I caught it to save it because my friends mom sprays pestiside like a mad man!
